VISUAL DISPLAY OF QUANTITATIVE DATA
Project: Working in groups of two, create two (2) charts, graphs, maps, or cartograms based on national or international data.

Due: FIRST CLASS MEETING AFTER WINTER BREAK

Basic Parameters:

1) No more than 15 words on your chart.
2) Title relevant to the data you presented
3) Data for at least 25 countries displayed on graphic.
4) One additional national/international statistic 5) Axes properly labeled & formatted

Grading:

Accuracy: Is the data presented correctly. Are the dimensions and proportions of the graph correct.
Originality: Did you use a basic design (Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Scatterplot, Line Map) or did you present the information in an original manner.
Clarity: How easy is your graph, chart, map to understand? How long does it take for an observer to see all parts of the presentation?
Neatness: How professional does your project look? Is it visually attractive? Are lines drawn straight? Is printing/coloring neat?
Relevance: Did the second statistic you chose increase your understanding of the first?

MAGNITUDE:
R2 > .50 = +10 R2 > .45 = +8
R2 > .40 = +7
R2 > .35 = +3
R2 > .30 = +1
R2 < .30 = - 5

BONUS: + 5 for Linear Relationship

ARTICULATION:

BONUS: + 5 for articulated second variable (Ex. Gender Inequality v. Income Inequality, Mean Number of Years Lived in Ill Health by African Americans vs. Life Expectancy)

GENERALITY:

BONUS: + 3 For Using Data from more than three continents or all 50 States

INTERESTINGNESS:

Finding a Strong, Non-Obvious Relationship (Black Swans) = + 5 Well Established Relationship, but Contrary to Conventional Wisdom = + 3
Par for the Course = 0
“Shocked! Shocked to find Gambling going on here!” = - 3
“Yes, the Sky is Blue; the Sun Rises in the East; 2 + 2 = 4” = - 5

BONUS: Effective execution of one of the following graphic forms: cartogram, residual plot, 3-D map/chart, radar chart, efficient scatterplot of three or more variables or integration of more than two basic visual display types = +15

BONUS: GRAPHICAL EXCELLENCE HAT TRICK – Use of all major design elements – color, shape, & size – to convey information in one harmonious graphic = +15

CLARITY / GESTALT:

FOREST & TREES = + 3 TREES, NO FOREST; FOREST, NO TREES = + 1
GRASS & SAGEBRUSH = 0
SAHARA DESERT = - 1
WHAT’S THIS TREE THING YOU SPEAK OF? = - 3

NEATNESS & PRESENTATION:

TEXT NEATLY WRITTEN, SQUARE ALIGNMENT, NO OBVIOIUS TEARING BENDING, CRINKLING, OR SMUDGING, APPLIQUES ATTACHED FIRMLY, & NON-DISTRACTING COLOR SCHEME = + 5
NOT PERFECT, BUT YEOMAN’S WORK = + 3 CLEARLY DEFICIENT IN ONE MAJOR PRESENTATION ATTRIBUTE = 0 SUBSTANDARD IN MORE THAN ONE PRESENTATION AREA = - 3 SET THE LAND-SPEED RECORD FOR POSTER ASSEMBLY . . . AND IT SHOWS = - 5

ACCURACY:

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE/CAUSE ON THE HORIZONTAL (X) AXIS = +1 DEPENDENT VARIABLE/EFFECT ON THE VERTICAL (Y) AXIS = +1
BEST FIT EQUATION & R2 PRINTED ON CHART = +1

APPLIQUES/DATA POINTS PLOTTED (IN)ACCURATELY ON CHART = (-5)/+3
EACH UNLABELED AXIS (“LABELS? WE DON”T NEED NO STINKIN’ LABELS) = -10
AXIS UNITS UNCLEAR (PER AXIS) = - 5

WORD LIMIT:

FOR EACH WORD ON CHART OVER 15, BUT UNDER 2 = -1 FOR EACH WORD OVER 20 = -5

OBSERVATIONS:

FOR EVERY n DATA POINTS BELOW THE REQUIRED 25 = - n2
